The Department of Computer Science is a vibrant, research-driven community delivering a range of innovative courses. We're proud of our reputation for research and teaching.

Our vision

Our vision reflects the unique strengths of computer science at York. We aim to lead education and fundamental research into the development and engineering of safe, ethical and secure computational systems. These systems should be:

  • safe for people to use, whether these are large-scale infrastructure systems like air traffic control or personal devices like medical infusion pumps.
  • ethical, in that they improve individual and social conditions through effective use of information, computation and resources.
  • secure, in that people, organisations and nations are protected from the incorrect use of such systems whether intentional, accidental or inadvertent.

Our research

We have an established world-class reputation for our research, and we understand the interdisciplinary nature of many of the problems computer scientists tackle.

Our research strengths are reflected in our departmental research groups and cross-disciplinary centres which span several academic departments. Members collaborate with scientific communities, industry, charities and policymakers to respond to challenges on both a national and international scale.

Our teaching

Our aim is to provide inspiring and engaging taught courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, which fully prepare our students for careers in industry or further study.

For postgraduate researchers, we offer a dynamic and challenging environment, where academic rigour and excellence is at the heart of everything we do. Our postgraduate researchers have the opportunity to work with leading academics and be a part of a growing community of doctoral scholars.

Aimed at industry professionals, our continuing professional development (CPD) short courses provide a comprehensive grounding in the principles of system safety engineering. Using a combination of self-study and face to face teaching, our academic CPD team are world leaders in the delivery of safety engineering education.

Facilities

Our lakeside home is based on Campus East, and we’re very proud of our facilities for both students and staff. We are home to several dedicated undergraduate and postgraduate software laboratories, and two hardware laboratories.

Our building also houses social and study spaces for students, and specialised labs for our research groups.

Culture of inclusivity

We’re committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community. A place where we can all be ourselves, contribute freely, and succeed on merit.

We’re making significant progress on many issues of equality, diversity and inclusion. In recognition of our work toward gender equality, we hold an Athena SWAN Bronze Award.
