College Student Leaders Award
From delivering community-building events, to representing our diverse student body, College Student Leaders are essential in making York’s collegiate system a vibrant, welcoming space for all our students.
As part of an enhanced version of the widely-recognised York Award, the York Award - College Student Leaders celebrates the hard work and dedication every student leader demonstrates in making a success of their committee role and supporting their College community.
College Leader Excellence Prize
All applicants for the York Award - College Student Leaders may also register for the College Leader Excellence Prize. This £1,000 prize recognises the outstanding contribution of one student leader each year that has had a significant impact on their college community and developed their leadership skills. Please follow the steps below for further information and to complete your application.
Why apply?
College Student Leaders are an integral part of the University of York’s student community and it is important that their commitment to supporting students and shaping our Colleges is properly recognised.
By receiving this enhanced version of York Award, on top of the benefits of the standard York Award, an applicant will be able to demonstrate to future employers that they’ve had a meaningful impact on hundreds of students, developed their skills and been an active member of a College’s leadership committee.
Who can apply?
For 2024/25, the York Award - College Student Leaders will take applications from registered students who are current or previous members of their Colleges Student Association Committee or Junior Common Room Committee.
Applicants must demonstrate the active role they played in contributing positively to the Committees activities and their role in supporting the wider College community.
How to apply
1. Complete the York Award Application
To get started, you must complete the normal York Award application process. You will have an option during the registration process to indicate you are a College Student Leader and this will be noted on your application.
2. Request a reference
As part of your application, you'll need a reference from a current member of the College team, who will have first-hand experience of your work as a Student Leader.
By completing the form, your referee will be automatically contacted to provide comments on their experience of working with you - you will not hear from them directly. If you do not receive a reference, you will still be eligible for the normal York Award.
3. Apply for the College Leader Excellence Prize
This prize is exclusive for York Award - College Student Leaders recipients. To apply for the £1,000 Excellence Prize, please visit the Reference Submission form above and complete the second section to give us more detail about the leadership skills you have developed while being on Committee and the impact you have had on your college’s community.

Deadline
To be considered for the York Award - College Student Leaders, you must have completed and submitted your York Award application before 11pm on Thursday 24 April and completed the Reference Submission form before 12pm on Friday 25 April.
