Science Capital
Because they set science investigations into real life contexts, ALL CIEC activities support children to understand the relevance to their lives both now and in the future. In addition, teachers may find the following resources helpful to raise children's aspirations and to combat stereotypes about who can be a scientist.
Science Capital Guide
New for 2024, the 'Guide to Developing Primary Science Capital' is a fully resourced collection of CPD sessions and classroom activities to support primary schools in developing a whole-school approach to building science capital.
Science subject leaders and senior leaders can use this guide to aid in the delivery of CPD to help primary teachers better understand how to develop children's science capital.
If you would like support implementing a science capital approach in your school with a dedicated CPD session linked to this publication and led by CIEC, please get in touch with us ciec@york.ac.uk.
Careers Cards
Career cards showcase 4 real life employees from Johnson Matthey and are a valuable way to let children see that a diverse range of 'ordinary' people can choose STEM careers and to begin to understand the variety of STEM careers.
Potatoes to Plastics
The first activity in Potatoes to Plastic (Scientists Today) gives children the opportunity to read about several real-life scientists. The second activity (Scientists Tomorrow) invites children to imagine themselves as STEM professionals of the future.
IndusTRY AT HOME
These activities are designed to be used with families and make explicit links between simple science investigations and real-life contexts. These have the potential to raise the science capital of all family members.
