Dr Joanne Bretherton invited to Japan for a Visiting Fellowship

Dr Joanne Bretherton, a Research Fellow from the Centre for Housing Policy, has been invited to Japan by Ritsumeikan University (Kyoto) to undertake a Visiting Fellowship. The Fellowship will focus on developing comparative research agendas around responses to domestic abuse and women's experience of homelessness and housing inequalities.
Throughout March and April 2019, Joanne will travel across Japan with Japanese scholars to observe service and policy responses for women and families experiencing homelessness and domestic abuse, before speaking at a national symposium in Tokyo.
A former resident of Japan, Dr Bretherton has a longstanding interest in developing research that compares British, Japanese and European experience of gender inequalities in housing, women's homelessness and the intersection of domestic abuse and homelessness services.
Dr Bretherton co-directs the Women's Homelessness in Europe Network (WHEN) and is co-editor of the 2017 book Women's Homelessness in Europe, published by Palgrave Macmillan. She is currently working with the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) on an evaluation of the DAHA accreditation process for enhancing reporting and responses to domestic abuse in the UK.
