Nicholas Pleace was an invited speaker at a conference hosted by the University of Cardiff "Homelessness in Great Britain: Taking the Long View" on 9th February 2016.
He spoke about the the estimated costs of single homelessness and the estimated savings from effective homelessness prevention in the UK. This is linked to his recent work on a report for the charity Crisis: Report (PDF , 282kb). Crisis have also created a graphic representation of this research as part of their 'No one turned away' campaign.
This anniversary conference looked back at 50 years of homelessness policy, examining contemporary concerns, and looking towards the challenges on the horizon in the UK, Europe and from a global perspective. The conference was organised jointly by the school of Geography and Planning at Cardiff University and Shelter Cymru.
In 1966 Shelter was established in order to speak for the millions of ‘hidden homeless’ people in the UK and in 1981 Shelter Cymru began as Welsh Housing Aid, in response to the lack of specialist housing advice for people in Wales. Both organisations have achieved a great deal, playing pivotal roles in the endeavor to ensure there’s a safe, secure, affordable home for everyone.
