The project 'Promoting protection of the right to housing - Homelessness prevention in the context of evictions' presented its findings to the European Commision on 16th October 2015 at a seminar in Brussels. The european smeinar was organised to discuss the findings and recommendations of the report. The event attracted approximately 150 experts and policy-makers. A balanced composition of participants was ensured by geographical spread and expert background. Also a limited number of key non-EU experts were invited.
Nicholas Pleace was the national expert for the UK and presented a paper on 'Preventing Homelessness following an Eviction'. The aim of the project is to promote protection of the right to housing and homelessness prevention in the context of evictions. The research identified early intervention and preventative measures, and created a profile of evicted households, risk factors and risk groups. Patterns of evictions across the EU Member States were analysed in the context of structural factors, the economic crisis, welfare systems, legal practices and protections, and other factors. Measures which prevent homelessness within all EU Member States remain a priority for the European Commission.
