Postdoctoral Research Associate

Lou Holland is a Postdoctoral Research Associate working with Dr Jon Agirre in the York Structural Biology Laboratory. They completed their PhD in Computational Plasma Physics for Nuclear Fusion at the University of York in 2023, alongside working as a Research Trainee in Microwave Current Drive Simulations for Nuclear Fusion at the York Plasma Institute. Both of these roles involved developing and using scientific codes to better understand the propagation of RF waves in magnetised plasmas, which they did under the supervision of Professor Roddy Vann. Though they have since changed fields to work in structural biology, their focus remains on developing and utilising software for scientific research.

Research interests

Their current work is centred on the Privateer software developed at the University of York. Privateer is a fast software package for the automated detection, model building and validation of carbohydrates bonded to protein chains. It is primarily written in C++ and Python but utilises HTML and JavaScript for visualisation. It is distributed as part of CCP4.
