This course is designed for people within the chemical (and related) industries as well as academics and students with an interest in solvent replacement strategies.
The aim of this course is to identify and understand the properties of solvents, and to approach solvent substitution in a systematic way that allows performance to be maintained with benign solvents.
The replacement of hazardous solvents has received much attention in the past two decades. High volumes of solvent use in industry as well as in consumer products have magnified concerns over toxicity, safety, and environmental impact. In attempts to eliminate undesirable solvents, replacement strategies often seek structurally related compounds not yet covered by the legislative and regulatory measures usually required to force action in this respect. It is important to emphasise that historically these measures have proven to be short-sighted with respect to increasingly strict chemical controls worldwide. The unfortunate consequences of solvent use are often linked to the beneficial attributes of the solvent, and this makes substitution more challenging than might be expected.
This online course will facilitate sustainable solvent substitution by providing an understanding of:
After completing the course, participants can expect to be able to identify green solvents, and make rational solvent substitutions for the improved environmental health and safety of their products and processes.
The course will cover the following areas:
The course will consist of an interactive blend of written material and videos. The content will be supported by self-assessment exercises in the form of both multiple-choice and more in depth questions to test understanding and to apply knowledge to a number of different scenarios/case studies.
