The O’Brien group is currently exploring the use of cyclic sulfoximines as new building blocks for use in medicinal chemistry. The sulfoximine group, an analogue of the sulfone functional group, is growing in popularity in medicinal chemistry due to the better aqueous and tunable solubility profile of sulfoximines compared to sulfones. However, stereoselective functionalisation reactions of sulfoximines, especially cyclic sulfoximines, are significantly under-developed. Building on our experience of organolithium chemistry, we are exploring new methodology for the synthesis of substituted cyclic sulfoximines. This research topic has received support from Asahi Kasei.
