Dr Hopkins is an NCAS scientist working in the area of Gas Phase Atmospheric Chemistry within the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories.
NCAS is a NERC collaborative centre that exists to perform core strategic research into atmospheric composition, to facilitate and coordinate research in this area, and to integrate that research into relevant activities in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and in NERC as a whole. For more details on NCAS see: www.ncas.ac.uk
Research Interests
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a number of important roles in the atmosphere. They can have direct impacts on human health; are intrinsic in the production of ground-level ozone and secondary aerosols (each with significant health impacts of their own), and are greenhouse gases in their own right. My research aims to improve the quality of VOC observations in order to better understand the processes determining the atmospheric composition in a range of environments during field deployments. Recent deployments and ongoing work include investigating: VOC source profiles from Beijing, China; emission of lightweight VOCs from biomass burning episodes; and biogenic emissions from a tropical forest environment in Borneo, Malaysia.
