Teaching laboratories

The teaching laboratories are comprised of three main areas; the laboratory, the instrument room and the foyer computer room.

The laboratory is split up into seven areas, each which contains all of the equipment and services used during a typical practical session. The laboratory is fitted with 80 two-person fume hoods and can accommodate up to 160 students.

The fume hoods are fully integrated and serviced with compressed air, nitrogen, natural gas, vacuum and water taps with sinks on either side. The hood sashes are there to ensure the experiments are contained within, and that it's properly ventilated.

Instrumentation room

The use of instrumentation is an integral part of our courses. The dedicated instrument room is used during practical sessions. There is an extensive range of modern analytical equipment with over 30 individual pieces of kit. Experimental data is stored remotely so it can be accessed at any time for report-writing.

This includes:

  • Infrared, UV/Vis and NMR Spectroscopy
  • Gas and Liquid Chromatography
  • Fluorimetry
  • Melting Point and Stopped-Flow Apparatus
  • pH Meter
  • Microscopy
  • Viscometry
  • Cyclic Voltammtery
  • Magnetic Susceptibility

Computer room

We have a dedicated computational lab where you can write up your lab reports, and analyse or reprocess data for practical and project work.
