Chemistry analytical facilities for business and industry

What can we solve together? Discover our analytical services.

Need to solve a chemical or biochemical problem? Our advanced analytical techniques, including NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and mass spectrometry, help researchers and businesses find solutions.

We provide state-of-the-art instrumentation and analytical services for internal and external academic and commercial users. Our clients include multinational chemical and pharmaceutical companies, start-ups, and SMEs.

Bespoke solutions

We provide tailored analytical solutions. Most of our services are offered as a full-service package, where our highly experienced staff conduct the analyses on your behalf.

Our capabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • characterising new compounds, materials and products
  • identification of unknowns
  • quality control and purity testing
  • process monitoring
  • catalysis studies
  • assessment of a final product.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)

Seven multinuclear spectrometers for liquid samples, including the Neo700MHz (with a liquid nitrogen-cooled cryoprobe) and a 400MHz spectrometer for solid samples.

Electron microscopy

Our 200 kV Thermo Scientific Glacios cryo-electron microscope supports single-particle analysis. We also have SEM and TEM for studies under heat, electrical bias, and gas.

As well as the services above we have an extensive array of specialist instrumentation and techniques available including:

  • Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy
  • Raman spectroscopy
  • Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC)
  • Surface area and pore size distribution analysis
  • UV-Vis spectroscopy
  • Infrared spectroscopy.

Our facilities are managed by:

  • Professor Richard Douthwaite, academic lead
  • Dr Hannah Briers, technical lead.

Our research centres

We are home to a number of specialist research centres:
