Tuesday 28 March 2023, 1.00PM to 2.00pm
Speaker(s): Professor Robin Bedford, University of Bristol
The talk will focus on the recent development of iron and cobalt-based catalysts for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions in the group; bringing together synthetic, catalytic and mechanistic investigations.
Robin is examining a PhD student from the Fairlamb research group and has agreed to delivering an ad hoc research seminar during his visit to York. Robin is an inspirational speaker and leading researcher in the area of cross-coupling catalysis. There will be links made across inorganic, organic and green chemistry. It will therefore bring together interests from across the Department.
After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in biochemistry at the University of Sussex in 1991, Robin moved across to organometallic catalysis for a D.Phil. with Penny Chaloner (1991–4), also at Sussex. He then undertook postdoctoral research with Anthony Hill at Imperial College London (1994–6). He was appointed to his first academic position, a fixed term lectureship in inorganic chemistry at Trinity College Dublin, in 1996.
In 1998 Robin moved to a lectureship in inorganic chemistry at the University of Exeter, where he was promoted to a Reader in Catalysis in 2003. Following the sad demise of Exeter’s chemistry department Robin moved to Bristol in 2005 as a Reader in Catalysis, and was promoted to Professor of Catalysis in 2008.
Robin was awarded an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (2004–09) and in 2006 received the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Sir Edward Frankland Fellowship for 2006/7. In 2009 he received the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Homogeneous Catalysis Award.
