RSC Centenary Lecture: Estrogens and Estrogen Receptors: Structure, Function, Ligand Discovery and In Vivo Imaging
Monday 7 December 2009, 3.30PM
Speaker(s): Professor John Katzenellenbogen, University of Illinois
John Katzenellenbogen is one of the world's leading authorities in
steroid chemistry. In many ways, he is the quintessential chemical
biologist - developing chemical insights and tools to answer questions
in biology. But his work has had much broader impact. His design of
isoform selective ligands has provided the tools to tease out the
biological function of different nuclear receptors, with profound impact
on our understanding of some disease processes. More recently, he has
taken this expertise into the development of selective diagnostic
imaging agents.
In this lecture, John will provide a broad overview of his work across
these different areas, with something for everyone - chemists,
biologists, pharmacologists and medics. It promises to be an excellent
example of the impact chemistry can have on biology, our understanding
of disease processes and the tools available to medicine.
