Tony has been at York since 1969 where his main roles have been as Assistant Director of the (then) Institute for Social & Economic Research, Head of the Department of Economics & Related Studies, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University. He currently holds a part-time chair in Economics at York and is Ontario Research Chair in Health Policy and System Design at the University of Toronto. He was the founding Vice Chair of the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence and is a member of the NICE Citizens Council Committee and the NICE International Advisory Committee. He chairs the Policy and Editorial Committees of the Office of Health Economics and until 2010 he also chaired the Research Advisory Council of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board in Ontario. He is a founding editor of the Journal of Health Economics, a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a CBE and has an honorary doctorate from the Stockholm School of Economics.
His current research interests relate to problems in thinking about how equity in health is best achieved and how decisions about cost-effective technologies are best arrived at.
