Maria Ana Matias is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Economics. She joined Health and Social Care Policy in May 2020. Prior to that, she was a teaching assistant at Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon, Portugal, where she taught Statistics and Data Analysis and Probabilities. She was also a researcher in the Mission Structure for the Sustainability of the Health Budgetary Programme, which was created by the Portuguese Government to monitor the financial performance of the Portuguese NHS and propose measures to enhance resilience and sustainability. Among other projects, she worked on the productivity of the Portuguese NHS hospitals, primary care reform, and absenteeism of healthcare workers.
She holds a PhD in Economics awarded by the Nova School of Business and Economics. Her main areas of research are in health economics applied to mental health. Part of her research focuses on the financing and organisation of mental health systems, socio-economic determinants of mental health, and drivers of adherence to psychotropic medication.
