Biography

Karl Claxton is a Professor in the Department of Economics and Related Studies at the University of York. He is also a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Health Economics, University of York.

He was a Harkness Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health and from 1999 until 2007 he held an adjunct appointment at Harvard as an Assistant Professor of Health and Decision Sciences.

His research interests encompass the economic evaluation of health care technologies.

He has served as a member of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence Appraisal Committee since 1999. He has represented the committee at a number of appeals and was an expert witness for the Institute during the judicial review in 2007. He is a member of the National Decision Support Unit and continues to contribute to the development of guidance for the appraisal of health technologies for NICE. He is also co-editor of the Journal of Health Economics. 

Karl Claxton was born on 1st March 1967.  He received a PhD in Economics, a MSc in Health Economics and a BA in Economics all from the University of York.
