Resources about the life and work of Alan Williams
Alan Williams was a great health economist, whose influence extended well beyond the academic profession. He led the development of health economics in the UK from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, and helped to establish one of Europe's leading centres of excellence in health economics: the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York.
Perhaps his best known intellectual contribution was the development of the QALY - the Quality Adjusted Life Year. The QALY is a practical way of measuring the impacts of decisions on people's health, in terms of both length and quality of life, which is now used to inform health care decision making in Britain and around the world. More than anyone else, Alan was responsible for developing the QALY into an operational measure, based on evidence from patient and public surveys, that can be used to make more transparent, efficient and equitable resource allocation decisions.
This new treasury of resources showcases Alan's life and work, and points you towards his many fine and lasting intellectual contributions.
