The refurbishment of Central Hall’s seating, aimed at elevating comfort, refreshing aesthetics, and prioritising safety.

Project overview

In December 2024 and February 2025 we’re refurbishing Central Hall’s tiered seating to improve comfort, aesthetics, and safety. This involves removing old fabric and padding, and replacing them with new sustainable materials.

Timeline

The work will be completed in sections to ensure Central Hall remains operational.

December 2024 - 3 of 5 sections will be refurbished.

February 2025 - the remaining sections will be completed.

Why are we doing this?

Enhanced Comfort: Better padding for improved seating.

Improved Look: Many of the current seating covers are ripped or damaged.

Safety Standards: Ensuring materials meet current regulations.

Sustainability

We’re taking significant steps to reduce the environmental impact of this project by partnering with a textile recycling specialist to repurpose old materials into items like car seat padding and cleaning cloths. By reupholstering rather than replacing, we’ll save tons of waste from landfills and support the Circular Economy. A full sustainability report will follow.

How will it affect me?

There will be minimal disruption as work will be completed in phases, keeping the hall open.

Due to costs and Central Hall’s listed building status, this project focuses on seating only.

Updates will be shared via Staff Digest and other channels to keep everyone informed and address questions. For inquiries, contact the DTEF team.
