2025 Dates: TBC

Online

Course Leader: Marina Cantarutti

This online three day short course will focus on the phonetics of talk-in-interaction. The course is intended for researchers in Conversation Analysis at all career stages who are interested in expanding their methodological toolkit to observe, describe, transcribe, and analyse phonetic detail in interaction.

The course will enable participants to:

  • Learn some of the basic linguistic terminology for the phonetic/prosodic description of speech.
  • Describe conversational speech in more technical terms.
  • Find out how to provide suitable evidence to illustrate some phonetic/prosodic phenomena.
  • Identify and describe linguistic phenomena and apply these to an interactional phenomenon in data sessions.
  • Network with colleagues from other organisations who share an interest in phonetics.

The course will take place online on dates - TBC. The course will run from 9am to 4.30pm BST (GMT+1) each day, and the daily synchronous online sessions will take place from 10.30am to 12noon and 1pm to 4.30pm BST (GMT+1).

Participants will learn some of the basic linguistic terminology of phonetic/prosodic description including phrasing, accentuation, articulatory setting and intonation to be able to describe conversational speech in more technical terms. Participants will learn how to provide suitable evidence (such as pictures in Praat, and phonetic transcription) to illustrate some phonetic/prosodic phenomena. There will be overviews of linguistic phenomena and a chance to apply these to an interactional phenomenon in data sessions.

The course will offer mini-lectures, skills demonstrations, ear-training and transcription sessions, data sessions, and short assignments to be completed in groups.

The course will be limited to 20 participants so that we can work intensively to develop basic skills in data analysis and to understand the core topics to be covered.

This was a fantastic course, I learnt so much, and I'm so grateful to Richard and Marina for organising it. They were fantastic tutors who kept the course informative and fun.

The University of York Phonetics of Talk-in-Interaction course was exceptional. I especially enjoyed the lab sessions and the data sessions. It was so helpful to learn how to effectively use Praat as an analysis tool and then to apply what we've learned to the interactional data, seeing how speakers use phonetic and prosodic resources in the implementation of social actions.

The course was extremely informative and really engaging. It offered plenty of opportunities to put our hands on data, with very effective guidance from Marina and Richard. It was a friendly and effective learning environment.

This course provided me for the insight of treating real data based on the phonetic theory and tools

It was certainly way beyond what you can expect from a three-day course. Marina and Richard prepared and delivered a fantastic set of sessions. Each session was linked thoughtfully and responded to our needs as interactional linguists. I wholeheartedly recommend the course!

The course was great - it increased my knowledge of phonetics and its application to CA, and has given me the confidence to experiment with Praat. Thank you!

This course has helped me to get to know different points of view of the same reality, so that later people can say that in the humanities we don't do science!

The course was great! Very well structured, organised and so informative! Highly recommended.

Richard Ogden is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of York. His research focuses on the phonetic details of naturally occurring conversation, including turn-taking, and the phonetic implementation of social actions, combining conversation analytic and phonetic methods. He also has an interest in multimodality. He is on the editorial boards of Phonetica and Interactional Linguistics, and is the author of the textbook An Introduction to English Phonetics.

Marina Cantarutti is a Lecturer in (Interactional) Linguistics at the University of York. Her research uses the methods of conversation analysis, gesture studies, and the phonetics of talk-in-interaction to the study of collaborative practices in interaction, such as anticipatory completions, choral productions, and co-animation. She is particularly interested in phonetic detail and gesture in interactional practices where people are momentarily “doing being” other people or ventriloquising objects.
