Information for employers

An apprenticeship is a genuine job with an accompanying assessment and skills development programme. It is a way for individuals to earn while they learn, gaining valuable skills and knowledge in a specific job role.

The apprentice gains this through a wide mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment.

Apprenticeships are suitable for people at any age and any level so you can hire someone new or upskill an existing employee, allowing you to grow talent and develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.

They can help you to:

  • Offer on-the-job training in a safe working environment
  • Build a culture of learning and development
  • Enjoy higher staff retention and morale
  • Promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace

Employer Responsibilities

  • Pay a "lawful wage" that complies with national minimum wage regulations for their age.
  • Allow the apprentice to complete their off-the-job training during normal working hours.
  • Support and deliver off-the-job training.
  • Give the apprentice appropriate support and supervision and the opportunity to consolidate new learning in the workplace.
  • Assist the provider in collecting evidence of off-the-job training.
  • Contribute to progress reviews (often referred to as Tripartite Reviews) with the apprentice and provider.
  • Agree and sign the documents of compliance for the start of the apprenticeship, generated by the University.

Apprenticeships have benefitted our organisation through the diversification of our workforce. Apprentices bring new ideas and skills to our workforce, whilst also contributing to the increase in productivity across the team
