School for Business and Society Scholarships - Social Policy and Social Work
Finance your research into Social Policy and Social Work with our 3-year PhD Studentship.
PhD applicants are invited to apply for a studentship that is available within our Social Policy and Social Work groups, to start in the academic year 2023/24.
Open to International (including EU) and UK (home) students.

All applicants must meet the Department’s standard PhD application requirements, which include as a minimum:
- An undergraduate honours degree equivalent to UK 2:1 or above
- The submission of a research proposal of 3000 words. For information on what to include within your research proposal, please see our guidance notes.
Applicants must also demonstrate that they have already completed substantial social sciences training in research methods which would enable them to undertake an independent research project in a particular discipline or interdisciplinary field.
An applicant must have at least 60 credits at Masters level of core social sciences research methods acquired in the last five years. This must include a broad range of methods, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods and the use of appropriate software/tools for their application, and comprehension of principles of research design and strategy, and an appreciation of alternative approaches to research.

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed, and the award will be based on academic merit and research potential. Students who are not successful in securing the studentship may still be offered a place conditional on their securing alternative funding.

This award is open to all students who adhere to the above criteria, but we are particularly seeking to support applications from candidates who self-identify as being from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) background.
- The funding will cover fees at the home student rate (currently £4,688 full time for 2022/23).
- A maintenance grant at the standard UK Research Council rate (currently £17,668 for 2022/23).
- International and EU students can apply but must be able to fund the difference in fees.
