María Ana Montes de Oca started her Ph.D. in Management at the University of York, in January 2020. She graduated from the University of Sussex with a MSc in International Marketing, and earned her BA degree from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico in Graphic Design with a concentration in information and communications technologies (ICT).
Her doctoral research explores the evolving methodological application of social media analytics to better understand the residents’ quality of life in an emerging economy through community participation. Her study contributes to the literature of economic development in the context of sustainable tourism development in an emerging market, following a “bottom-up” approach based on collaboration. This research aims to propose a model of best practice using a mixed-method approach of social media analytics and in-depth interviews. The study explores the importance of the resident’ quality of life indicators and its integration in tourism development planning to provide insights into governments and destination management organizations (DMOs).
Having had over 15 years of corporate experience in different areas of knowledge discovery and innovation management within industries including hospitality, education, and manufacturing in Mexico, the USA, and the UK. Maria Ana aims to utilize her industry experience to bridge the gap between academic theory and corporate technology.
