Gillian has a first degree in Psychology and a PhD in Social Policy. She has been a researcher since she graduated, working in the third sector and at the Universities of Birmingham, Oxford, York, Leicester and Nottingham. She was appointed to a Chair at Leicester in 1993 and established a new research unit there. From 2001-2005, Gillian was Programme Director of the NIHR R&D Programme on Service Delivery and Organisation and from 2002-2004, Head of the Policy Research Programme, Department of Health. She returned to York in 2005 and was director of SPRU until 2014.
