Andrew is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the ESRC Vulnerabilities and Policing Futures Research Centre, which is co-led by the University of York and the University of Leeds. The Centre explores how the police and other services can best work together to prevent and reduce vulnerabilities, such as modern slavery, mental illness and homelessness.
Andrew first joined the School for Business and Society in 2022 to work on a study of unmet treatment need for substance misuse, which was funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR). Prior to this, he was a Research Fellow at the University of York’s Department of Health Sciences (2019-22). Andrew completed his PhD in the Department of Geography at University College London (UCL) in 2018, jointly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council. He was a Visiting Scholar in the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia (USA) in 2017. Andrew completed an MSc in Health Sciences at the University of York in 2013, which was funded by the NIHR.
Andrew is currently working on two studies within the ESRC Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre. The first project is focused on mental health and routine police work, aiming to illustrate the techniques, models and intervention methods used by the police when responding to people with mental health vulnerabilities. The second project is focused on modern slavery, aiming to explore how preventative approaches could reduce demand on police services over the longer term.
Andrew’s previous research has used mixed methods to study vulnerable populations, including people who use drugs, people living with dementia, young people, and indigenous people. His research and impact activities have been funded by the NIHR, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Natural Environment Research Council, UK Research and Innovation, and the Royal Geographic Society.
