CITY College visit sparks entrepreneurial ideas

News | Posted on Sunday 21 April 2024

On 16 and 17 April our Business Planning & Sustainable Entrepreneurship module team hosted a visit from CITY College staff and students.

Visit

What followed were two days of exciting and enriching learning activities for students and staff from CITY College and School for Business and Society. Linked to their studies in business planning and sustainable entrepreneurship, this is the second event to have taken place that connects entrepreneurship teaching and learning between the two sites, following the successful visit of staff and students to Thessaloniki last year.

Learning experience

Students had the opportunity to 'pitch' the ideas they had developed during their studies, coach their peers on their business plans in an interdisciplinary enterprise workshop, and to network.

Local businesses

They also met with local entrepreneurs at our start-up hub 'The Catalyst' and the Phase One incubator, saw the Fix Our Food research programme in action whilst visiting the indoor vertical community farm 'Grow it York' at SPARK in York City Centre, sampled locally brewed beer at Brew It York, and explored our beautiful historic city.

CITY College group visit Grow It York

Claire Sinclair, Lecturer in Management, said: "This initiative is unique in that it connects students participating in sustainable entrepreneurship modules in their respective countries, and enables them to visit one another to share their business ideas and exchange learnings and perspectives from their studies.

It has been incredible to see students grow in confidence and strengthen their knowledge by engaging in a range of activities pertaining to sustainable entrepreneurship. When York students visited CITY College last year, it proved to be an incredibly valuable and transformative experience that helped position them well for future academic and professional endeavours. It has been fantastic to be able to reciprocate by hosting CITY College students in York, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen the friendship between the two communities further."

Thank you to Claire Sinclair, Jane Suter, Catherine Botting, Simon Kelly, Nicola Forsdike, Aggeliki Papakonstantinou and Alexandra Prodromidou for organising this partnership event, it was a fantastic learning opportunity for our students and CITY College students.
