Public Management Review Best Paper Award 2019
Dr Madeline Powell wins award for paper based on her research as a PhD student at The York Management School
Dr Madeline Powell has won the Public Management Review 2019 Best Paper award for a paper co-authored with two other colleagues from The York Management School, Professor Bob Doherty and Dr Alex Gillett.
The paper was based on Maddy's PhD research which was supervised by Alex and internally examined by Bob.
Maddy's work used hybrid organizing as a lens to analyse case study interview data from ten SEs delivering adult day-care services. The paper identified three factors which affect a SE’s ability to simultaneously achieve social outcomes and financial sustainability and thus create value-spillovers for society. These are diverse income streams to strengthen financial viability and reduce reliance on service-level agreements and grants; delivering social quality (quality of social impact) as well as service quality, and a hybrid workforce.
The paper is available online here.
