Event details

The School’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee are pleased to invite you to our next EDI Forum. In this SBS EDI Forum, we will focus on Intersectionality to mark Islamophobia Awareness Month. Islamophobia is a long running issue in our society and has been brought to the fore by recent events.

Muslims often face multiple levels of hidden discrimination within society, as Muslims but often also as other minority groups. In the professional environment this can often manifest in institutional behaviours such as a Muslim name as being 3 times less likely to be offered job interviews. Over 70% of young muslims now report mental health problems as a result of exposure to discriminatory behaviour.

Islamophobia Awareness Month aims to share experiences and raise awareness of the pressures faced by Muslims, often in silence, and allow communities to come together in mutual understanding so such discrimination can be tackled.

The event provides a safe space for discussions and reflections on Islamophobia with staff and students. In this EDI event we will focus on building bridges of understanding, which will serve to underpin a strong cohesive society for all by exploring what life is like for Muslim professionals and how we can begin to understand challenges they face. We warmly welcome colleagues and students to engage in honest, open and genuine discussion as these are the building blocks for tolerance and understanding.

We will warmly welcome questions from our SBS colleagues, to generate discussion about Islamophobia with time for Q&A.

Our presenter is:

  • Dr Shafaq Hussain-Ali who lives and works in Yorkshire as a General Dental Practitioner, with an interest in treating anxious patients. In 2019 she was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD), at 40yrs of age
  • Dr Hussain-Ali will be exploring the intersections of life as a Muslim, a professional , and activist for YOPD education.

Please kindly note that we will be taking some photos at the event, for marketing purposes. Please let Dr Ali Naqvi (ali.naqvi@york.ac.uk) know should you not wish to be included, either via email or at the event itself. Further information about the University’s processes for capturing photography and video can be found here.
