Event details

In 2023 we are expanding the conference to two days and shall hold it in the historic surroundings of the Guildhall in central York, which hosted King Richard III when it was newly built in 1483.

As at SMIFUK22 we will examine a wide range of topics relevant to SMIFs as small institutional investors, ranging from how to select new student analysts, strategies to enhance diversity and inclusion in the analyst body, financial decision making and biases, asset pricing and market sentiment. We will include topics presented by SMIF committee members, staff supervising them, investment academics, industry professionals (especially SMIF alumni) and investment authors and journalists. Proposals for talks on all these topics are welcome.

We are offering tickets to student analysts at well below cost price as we want as many SMIFs from around the UK to attend as possible. We can also cover 80% of student travel costs where the student cannot claim it back from their home university (cheapest standard class rail ticket or equivalent). Sponsors and speakers will be invited to a quality restaurant on the Wednesday evening. The ticket price includes two buffet lunches and refreshments.

Academic papers

NEW for 2023 we are adding a track of academic papers. You will present your paper to a mixed audience of other academics, SMIF CIOs and risk officers who will soon be working in the finance industry, existing fund managers and donors. All topics in finance will be considered but your paper should be of interest to people who manage small (mainly equity) investment funds. Please email your paper to SBS-SMIFUK@york.ac.uk. The deadline for submission is 18th December 2022. Authors will be notified on or before 10th February 2023. Authors of accepted papers will be expected to present their paper in person during the conference on 8th-9th March 2023.
