Case study: Heal
Novel uses of nature's solutions for healthcare and pharmaceuticals.
Challenge
With the highly volatile price of sugar, GSK and Veolia came to the Biorenewables Development Centre to develop alternative feedstocks for the manufacture of off-patent medicines such as antibiotics.
Strategy
GSK, Veolia and the Biorenewables Development Centre have been working together to evaluate the use of high starch food co-products as sugar sources for pharmaceutical production.
Outcome
Initial studies have been successful. Through integrating the stages in the innovation chain, BioYork would accelerate commercialisation of this and similar processes.
Next steps
A proposal to pilot the process to establish its commercial viability has been submitted.
