Our approach
BioYork translates and transforms cutting-edge research into technologies, processes and products across the bioeconomy.
We turn scientific discoveries into commercial ideas and scale them up – bringing new innovations across agriculture, health and medicines, energy, chemicals and beyond to capitalise on global markets.
By doing so, we aim to address the major 21st century challenges of healing, feeding and fuelling the world:
- Heal – Novel uses of nature's solutions for healthcare and pharmaceuticals
- Feed – Improving the productivity, sustainability and nutritional value of crops and food
- Fuel – Developing new sources of bio-based fuels and chemicals
Case studies
Heal
With the highly volatile price of sugar, GSK and Veolia came to York's Biorenewables Development Centre to develop alternative feedstocks for the manufacture of off-patent medicines such as antibiotics.
Feed
Agricultural contractor Velcourt wanted to develop a sustainable supply of oil with novel functionality for food and non-food applications.
Fuel
Facing reduced demand in the pulp and paper industry, Circa Chemicals came to the University of York to see what could be done with its abundant supply of cellulose.
