(b) CELL DIVISION AND CELL EXPANSION DURING ARABIDOPSIS LEAF ORGANOGENESIS Leaf primordia develop from a group of founder cells at the periphery of the shoot apical meristem. We are interested in how patterns of cell division and cell expansion within the shoot apical meristem affect leaf development, including leaf morphogenesis and phyllotaxy. We are using promoter-driven GAL4 transactivation to perturb the cell cycle in precise domains within the Arabidopsis shoot apical meristem and leaves. This provides an opportunity to determine the response and fate of neighbouring cells to alterations in cell division, and the role of cell division and cell expansion in the development of lateral organs such as leaves.
