Research centres on the regulation of intestinal nutrient absorption. We have shown that the apical GLUT2 pathway of intestinal glucose absorption accounts for >75% of glucose absorbed during digestion. Under these conditions some 70% of calcium absorption occurs through the L-type channel Cav1.3. Our recent work focuses on the role of intestinal sweet and umami taste receptors in controlling nutrient absorption.
Discoveries
We discovered the major route calcium absorption across the small intestine during digestion. We provided the first functional demonstration of sweet taste receptors in the small intestine by showing that, together with calcium absorption, they control the major route of glucose absorption previously discovered by us.
