CANCELLED: How can we move beyond measuring status and change with environmental monitoring data?

The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology runs several long term, national scale environmental monitoring schemes, as well as contributing to the running of several national scale citizen science recording projects. These surveys are used to establish the current status and trends in several important indicators of biodiversity and ecosystem quality to inform policy and land management.

Here I will discuss how we are using these rich data sources to not only understand status and change but also apply and develop novel data analysis techniques that integrate different data to better understand the drivers of change and how these changes can vary across spatial and taxonomic scales.

I will discuss how incorporating measurement error into assessments of structured survey data can lead to more robust understanding of how soils and vegetation are recovering from acidification across the UK, how we can now jointly model the responses of different species to better understand how whole communities respond to the environment, and how integrating structured monitoring and citizen science data can lead to greater understanding of how species distributions change.
