Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms that form in a manner dependent on the production of an extracellular matrix. Bacillus subtilis is a Gram-positive soil dwelling bacterium that forms biofilms on the roots of plants. We are interested in the structure and function of the protein components in the biofilm matrix. I will discuss our recent findings in this area covering BslA, a bifunctional protein with industrial uses, and TasA, a fibre forming protein.
