Summary of key standards

Expected safety standards for all work equipment capable of causing significant harm or injury:

  • Purchased equipment checked to ensure it is safe to use for the intended purpose, and designed and constructed to comply with all relevant standards
  • Work equipment registered on the departmental asset register and adequately maintained in a safe condition
  • Risk assessment and / or safe operating procedure documenting the significant hazards, risk control measures and clear instructions on safe use
  • Training (recorded) of all users

Equipment is adequately maintained in a safe condition (in line with the risk assessment, manufacturers, and sector guidance) such that its performance does not deteriorate to the extent that people are put at unacceptable risk, and maintenance records are held and available for inspection and monitoring purposes
