Procedure for disposal of non-hazardous identifiable laboratory waste
Only dispose of non-hazardous identifiable consumable lab waste via this route
Use thick gauge 'Tiger' bags (supplied by Biology Stores) to minimise risk of the bags being punctured by e.g. pipette tips and pipettes
Pipettes must be disposed of in ‘Pipette Bins’ (available from Biology Stores- see image). These can be disposed in the ‘Tiger' bag when full.
It is recommended that pipette tips are disposed of in plastic disposal jars / bins (available from Biology Stores) or small pipette bags. These can be disposed of in a 'Tiger' bag when full
Place bags in bins labelled 'Non-Hazardous Identifiable Lab Waste Only'
Do not overfill waste bags; overfilled bags can cause spillage of contents or be difficult to lift. Replace when they are either three quarters full or reach a maximum of 10 kg
Secure full bags with a coded cable tie to prevent spillage of contents
Label bags to identify lab group
Leave bags next to hand wash sink for collection by Cleaning Staff for disposal in the external bins used for 'Tiger' bag waste
Alternatively, lab workers can dispose of the 'Tiger' bags themselves directly into the external bins near Biology Stores
