Disposal of Individual (Non-Solvent) Hazardous Waste Chemicals
The following specific individual hazardous waste chemicals will need to be collected separately and disposed of via Biology Stores & Goods Services:
- Concentrated reactive substances e.g. acids, alkalis, peroxides, oxidising and reducing agents
- Note: Specific individual reactive substances must be collected in 'contained' (plastic coated) 2.5L (Winchester) bottles that have been thoroughly rinsed before use (confirmed by a sticker available from Biology Stores).
- Waste containing ‘heavy metals’ and ‘transition metals’
- ‘PCBs’ (polychlorinated biphenyls)
- Mercury spillage (including mercury contaminated tissues/sponges/glass)
- Old/Unwanted stock chemicals in original package
- Silicon oil
- Other unlisted such as acetonitrile, amines, ethanediol, dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), phenol
Chemical waste containers must be labelled with:
- description of waste
- source of the waste
- originating lab group(s)
- date disposed
If you are not sure what category your chemical is please ask.
