Responsibilities
Head of Department
Heads of Department (HoD) is ultimately responsible for the management of biological/clinical waste generated in the department until its consigned to the contractor.
The HoD is responsible for ensuring that:
- sufficient resources are made available to control and manage waste in the department
- the deparment complies with the requirements of the University Waste Policy and Management Procedure
Health & Safety Advisor
The H&S Advisor is responsible for:
- assisting with the preparation of local departmental waste disposal procedures
- checking compliance with university and departmental waste disposal practices and procedures as part of general and specific departmental safety inspections/audits
Supervisors / Group Leaders / Managers
Supervisors / Group Leaders / Managers are responsible for:
- ensuring that all their workers receive local instruction and training on the appropriate waste disposal routes for different wastes produced by their work activities
- day-to-day supervision of operating procedures relating to laboratory waste arising in a specific laboratory and compliance with this policy
Individual Workers (includes Staff and Students)
Individual workers are responsible for:
- appropriate segregation, packaging, labelling and disposal of different waste materials via the correct waste stream
- reporting any incidents, breaches of and non-conformance with the departmental waste policy to their line manager or the Departmental H&S Advisor
