The Department of Biology is committed to ensuring the Health, Safety and Welfare of all its staff, visitors and students, so far as is reasonably practicable. It also fully accepts its responsibility for other persons who may be affected by its activities.
Appropriate steps are taken to fulfil these objectives, including the provision of suitable information, instruction, training or supervision to enable work activities to be carried out safely. Members of staff having specialist competence are appointed to ensure compliance with statutory duties. Arrangements are also made to enable all workers in the department, and their representatives, to raise health and safety issues.
The successful implementation of this policy requires the commitment of all members of the department and its visitors, and, for those responsible for generating specific hazards, to take ownership and management of them. The Department will adopt an open and positive attitude towards health and safety, an attitude which involves a shared perception of the importance of safety, and the sharing of information without an undue emphasis on the assignment of blame.
The details of departmental organisation and arrangements for health, safety and welfare are set out in relevant sections of this departmental safety web site. The effectiveness of safety management in the department will be monitored and revised as and when necessary.
