Specific Considerations
Account must also be taken of other factors such as:
- Size, layout and distribution of departmental buildings (Biology has 16 separate or interconnecting buildings or ‘blocks’ spread out over an area of over 30,000 square metres). As such, at least one First Aider should be present in each building / block.
- Specific nature of activities within the Department. As such, at least one First Aider should be present on each floor of a building / block used for laboratory research / workshop activities which present greater risk compared to office areas.
- Undergraduate Students: a variable proportion of over 600 Biology Undergraduate Students that use departmental facilities (eg Teaching Lab and lecture room facilities) will be present in the Biology buildings during semesters.
- Absence / unavailability of some FAs at any given time.
The general and specific considerations outlined above were used as a basis for the recommended number of FAs appropriate for each area of Biology, as detailed in the table of departmental First Aider requirements.
This indicates that a minimum of 22 FAs (plus ≥ 6 Teaching Lab Technicians to cover U/G practical classes) should be appointed for the Department of Biology
Additional FAs may also be required for some specific activities external to the departmental buildings eg field work activities.
Note: this is a provisional estimate of the number of first aiders required by the Department of Biology. The requirements could change following consultation with individual groups from different areas of the Department.
