The Hazard Severity Level Coding system (hazard severity level codes 1-4), previously used by the University to indicate the severity of harm if a person was exposed to a particular substance, is no longer used. The new labelling system for chemicals now provides a good indication of:
type of hazard (from the hazard warning symbol)
level of hazard (from the signal words ‘warning’ or ‘danger’)
associated with a particular chemical, avoiding the need for an additional in-house hazard coding system.
Labs will continue to have a number of chemical stocks with a yellow sticker attached indicating the old hazard level code. This is no longer relevant and should be ignored.
