Notes
The above table should be regarded as an indicative list of infectious substances that meet the criteria for Category A infectious substances and should not be regarded as exhaustive. Other infectious substances, including new or emerging pathogens, which do not appear in the table but which meet the same criteria must be assigned to Category A and if there is doubt as to whether or not a substance meets the criteria it is also to be included in Category A. The definition of a Category A infectious substance is one which is carried in a form that, when exposure to it occurs, is capable of causing permanent disability, life-threatening or fatal disease to humans or animals.

*Bluetongue virus is on the indicative list in ADR but not IATA. However, since all shipments involve road transport it should always be classified and transported as a category A infectious substance.
