Site directed mutagenesis: do the GM regulations apply?
The GM regulations DO NOT apply to the use of ‘random mutagenesis’ techniques e.g. caused by chemicals / radiation
The GM regulations DO apply for ‘site directed mutagenesis’ techniques (e.g. by DNA editing or synthetic DNA techniques which introduce precise sequence changes at a specific base pair) where this could NOT be achieved by ‘random mutagenesis’ (e.g. a combination of three or four different mutations designed to introduce a new function).
