Containment of Organisms with a Gene Drive
Some strategies of containment:
- Molecular:
- Place drive components Cas9 and guide RNA at different loci (‘split drive’)
- Use target sequences unique for lab strain
- Ecological:
- Perform experiments in area where wild species does not exist
- Use lab strain that cannot reproduce with wild strain
- Physical:
- Barriers between organisms and the environment (triple)
- Remove barrier only when organism is inactive
- Take precautions to prevent breaches due to human errors
