Sharing our work and what we've learned
Connecting and sharing our work with the general public is an important and continuous element of our work at the Centre.
Through public lectures, talks, focus groups, video content and live demonstrations we decode the complexities of AI and autonomous systems and help people to understand the work being done to enable the safe and equitable roll out of AI enabled systems for all.

Inspiring Future Generations
As part of our ongoing public outreach programme we work with local primary school, Lord Deramore's School on the annual FIRST® Lego® League challenge. It's designed to help young people engage with STEM and helps build valuable transferable skills. With our support, the young people involved have won awards for their entries two years running.
Inclusive autonomy
The equity of autonomous systems is a challenge which we at the Centre investigate through our research. However this is also an important area for public engagement - especially with those for whom autonomous systems can aid their everyday lives. Through work with Greenacre School in Sheffield we helped pupils design and and build their own robots, and encouraged them to challenge assumptions which helped our researchers develop a better understanding of how to create more inclusive autonomous systems.
Engaging the public on safe AI
As the acceleration of AI technologies continues, it's important to both stay connected with public perceptions and views around AI and autonomy and to demonstrate the value of independent, publicly-available research. At the Centre for Assuring Autonomy, we've been engaging with the public through focus groups, vox pops and events like the Festival of Ideas.

Demonstrating the value of our research
Throughout the year we hold public events here at our base in the Institute for Safe Autonomy and at locations across the University of York. From participating in YorkTalks and the Festival of Ideas to school tours and open days, publicly demonstrating our research and the work that we do around safe AI, autonomy and robots is a critical part of our public engagement work.
Join our newsletter to stay up-to-date on our upcoming events and public engagement activities.
