Open Call: Early career development support for Yorkshire screen industries research
The White Rose Early Career Screen Industries Research Network is seeking proposals for projects, events and initiatives that support the development of screen industry engagement and the wider Early Career Researcher community in Yorkshire.
The aim is to provide support for ECR scholars from different disciplines and institutions to work together to advance screen industries research in the region and support the development of a dynamic research community.
This call is open to ECRs working at any institution across the Yorkshire region and scholars from different disciplines (management, social sciences, film, media and games studies etc) who are interested in exploring different approaches to the screen industries. By screen industries we are generally referring to film, television, video games and immersive media of all types.
We hope to work with ECRs to support a number of projects, with a budget of up to £2,000 each and a timeline of less than 12 months. Collaborative projects between universities are encouraged and priority will be given to proposals that support engagement between different universities in the region. This opportunity is open to anyone who considers themselves an ECR including PGR students (UKRI usually defines ECR as within 8 years of receiving the PhD or 6 years of first academic appointment).
Proposals should align with at least one of the following two key priorities and could include but is not limited to the following areas:
One - Industry Engagement
- Events or workshops focused on facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange between academic and external industry partners.
- Small-scale commissions working with screen practitioners (filmmakers etc).
- Research dissemination events or projects that engage industry.
- Initiatives that explore the multidisciplinarity of screen industries research in an industry context.
- Pilot projects for collaborations with industry to develop new partnerships across the Yorkshire region.
- Development events focused on collaborating with industry partners.
Two - ECR Professional Development
- Training and development initiatives - directed towards writing, research methods, funding opportunities, publishing, career sustainability or other areas.
- Events that share new approaches, methodologies, or theories for screen industries research.
- Activities that explore careers beyond academia and planning for alternative or hybrid career pathways.
- Projects that seek to strengthen the research profile of screen industries researchers in the region or the screen industries research community in the region.

If you would like to develop a project through this open call, please complete this short form with a brief outline of your proposed activity and estimate of costs by 30 September 2022.
