Event details

After months of pre-production,  fundraising and production, 3rd-year film and TV production students behind the 15-minute short period drama, St. John’s Blessing, are delighted to present its official screening in the Holbeck cinema this June!

Join us for an immersive screening of this period drama, featuring original string-based score by the incredibly talented music student Izzie Burger de Fremol. Set in 18th century Bavaria, in a prison cell, the film follows the story of defiant prisoner Thomas Baum (Robert Salathiel) who has been condemned for sodomy and who faces a difficult face-to-face confrontation with his executioner, Ehrhart Leichnam (Leon Brown). The central conversation of the film is about the forbidden queer narratives lost to history.

The film is quiet and restrained, with an austere shooting style that gives its most intimate moments space to truly be felt. Our editor has turned our complex and layered script into a measured, contemplative viewing experience that encourages our viewers to critically engage with the difficult subject matter.

Upcoming actors Leon Brown and Rob Salathiel star as Ehrhart Leichnam and Thomas Baum, the tortured executioner and defiant prisoner in this dramatic character study. Their sensitive and nuanced performances are at the heart of this tale.

Trigger Warnings: weapons, execution, incarceration
