Event details

Can the theatre experience be replicated in cinemas?

As part of an academic project on the BSc (Hons) in Film and Television Production, researching the phenomenon of filmed theatre, audiences are invited to a screening of Gregory Doran's The Tempest. The play, noted by critics for its novel use of advanced lighting and projection techniques within classical Shakespeare, was originally broadcast within cinemas, but is now being brought back to life within the School of Arts and Creative Technologies.

This event will involve a screening of the original recording of The Tempest, accompanied by an ambient lighting show stretching across the audience space, in sync with the onscreen aesthetic.

This event will cater to both those with an interest in traditional Shakespeare, as well as cinematography or theatre lighting. It will implement a contemporary and fast-paced lighting design, whilst still respecting the tradition of Shakespearean theatre. Please note, as part of this academic research project, the audience will be asked to complete a brief survey asking for their opinions on the effectiveness of the light show in conveying the emotion and intensity of the play. This will follow the screening.

Doors will open at 18:00 on the 28th March, with the screening commencing at 18:20.
