Buster Keaton's 'The General' (1929) Student Screening
Come join us for a special screening of the classic silent film 'The General' directed by Buster Keaton. This event is exclusively for students and will take place at the Holbeck Cinema, located in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies, Baird Lane, York, UK. Get ready to enjoy a timeless piece of cinema history!
6:15pm - 6:30pm Pre-Screening Talk
Prior to the screening, and once attendees are seated, the event hosts will provide a short and insightful talk about 'The General' and the importance of the event.
6:30pm - 8:00pm Film Screening
One of the most revered comedies of the silent era, this film finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny's fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton's boundless wit and dexterity. The duration of the film is 1 hour 16 minutes. There will be no interval.
8:00pm - 8:30pm Exhibition Exploration
After the screening attendees are encouraged to view our small exhibition in the Holbeck Cinema foyer. Please take this time to complete our short questionnaire.
This event is part of the BA Business of the Creative Industries 'Group Project' module. The hosts are focused on exploring the contemporary relevance and perception of silent cinema amongst young audiences. If you'd like more information please contact us.
There will be free food and drinks for those attending. (Gluten/Dairy free and vegan options available).
These can be enjoyed in the foyer, prior to or after the screening but can not be brought in to the Holbeck Cinema.
